Patient Access Specialist
Ascension St. Vincent Jennings
On-Site role
$17 per hour
Start/End Dates: 3/17/2026 – 3/16/2027

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Patient Access Specialist is a vital member of the healthcare team at Ascension St. Vincent Jennings, responsible for supporting patient access operations across multiple departments. As the first point of contact for patients, you will manage a high volume of incoming calls, schedule appointments and procedures, and ensure accurate registration and coordination of services. This role requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced environment. You will collect and enter demographic, billing, clinical, and insurance information, provide patient education, and communicate effectively with both clinical staff and patients to ensure a seamless patient experience. The ideal candidate is customer-service driven, highly organized, and comfortable navigating multiple technology systems.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Serve as the first point of contact for patients via phone or in-person interactions, ensuring a positive and welcoming experience.
  • Manage a high volume of incoming calls and schedule patient visits and procedures across multiple hospitals and outpatient centers.
  • Coordinate patient scheduling in alignment with departmental clinical protocols and collaborate with medical staff to optimize scheduling efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collect and accurately enter demographic, billing, clinical, and insurance information into multiple technology systems.
  • Provide patient education, including preparation instructions for scheduled procedures, and inform patients of applicable co-pays and deductibles due at the time of service.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with clinical staff regarding real-time patient status and respond to patient questions or concerns, directing them to the appropriate department as necessary.
  • Review and analyze financial data within the registration system, communicating relevant details to patients and the business office.
  • Navigate and multitask across several technology systems simultaneously to ensure accurate and timely service delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, clinical teams, ancillary departments, and patients to support coordinated care.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned to support patient access operations.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one year of call center experience.
  • Strong customer service skills and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask and work across multiple computer systems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of incoming calls efficiently and professionally.
  • Experience in a hospital, clinic, or medical office environment (preferred).
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology (preferred).
  • Ability to see, read, and operate computers, phones, office equipment, and documents.
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods while working with computers or telephones.
  • Frequent verbal communication skills and ability to respond quickly, especially in urgent situations.
  • Manual dexterity for equipment operation, typing, and documentation tasks.
  • Ability to walk, assist in transporting/ambulating patients, and move supplies or equipment.
  • Ability to push/pull gurneys and portable equipment, including items over 5 lbs.
