ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client is seeking an experienced Environmental Health Regulatory Specialist to ensure strict compliance with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ environmental protection regulations, focusing on air quality, facility-wide emission restrictions, and reporting requirements within laboratory operations. As the lead technical and regulatory resource for the laboratory unit, you will be responsible for ensuring all emissions data, calculations, and documentation meet proper standards and reporting requirements. This role requires a strong engineering or scientific background and hands-on experience with regulatory compliance and environmental reporting. You will play a critical part in maintaining the laboratory’s compliance programs, supporting regulatory inspections and audits, and providing technical guidance to staff.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Lead and manage compliance with facility-wide emission restrictions, emissions caps, and reporting requirements for laboratory operations.
  • Ensure laboratory unit activities, equipment, and processes meet all applicable air quality standards and permit conditions.
  • Prepare, review, and submit accurate monthly and rolling 12-month emissions reports in accordance with state requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and oversee emissions tracking systems, calculations, and recordkeeping specific to laboratory operations.
  • Verify emissions data accuracy through coordination with laboratory staff, engineering, and facilities personnel.
  • Monitor emissions trends, identify potential compliance risks or exceedances, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Interpret and apply air quality regulations and related guidance to laboratory emission sources.
  • Serve as the primary laboratory unit point of contact for department communications, inspections, audits, and regulatory inquiries.
  • Support development and enforcement of laboratory standard operating procedures related to emissions control and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide training and technical guidance to laboratory staff on DEP compliance requirements and emissions tracking practices.
  • Stay current on regulatory updates and ensure laboratory compliance programs are updated accordingly.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental regulatory compliance, air quality management, or emissions reporting, with direct responsibility for DEP or state-level compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience ensuring compliance with state standards, preferably in a laboratory, research, healthcare, or industrial setting.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory emission sources, control technologies, and emissions calculation methodologies.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and emissions tracking tools for regulatory reporting.
  • Proven ability to manage regulatory inspections, audits, and agency correspondence.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and documentation skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
