Job Function Summary:

  • Involves the design and management of software, hardware and databases for a clinical imaging system(s), used in clinical practice and / or research. Supports a secured network for the transmission of patient information, workstations for interpreting and reviewing images, and archives for the storage and retrieval of images and reports.
  • Provides technical training and assistance to users.

Generic Scope:

  • Experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.

Custom Scope: 

  • Under the general direction Medical Imaging shop supervisor, the incumbent works independently to perform a variety of routine and complex technical tasks associated with the installation, scheduled maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of imaging and clinical equipment (hardware, software, and databases).
  • Incumbent performs scheduled maintenance on imaging systems using specialized test equipment, assists in the support of a systematic preventative maintenance program of biomedical instrumentation, and documents the introduction of new therapeutic and diagnostic imaging equipment, corrective and preventive maintenance actions and special requests as required.
  • The incumbent must provide consultative and collaborative services to Clinical and Technology leaders of the various imaging departments by analyzing changing technical requirements, clinical needs, processes, and procedures for the development of maintenance programs on a variety of imaging systems.
  • In discharging these responsibilities, the Imaging Engineer must be acutely aware of and adhere to all defined clinical work flows and will make recommendations on said work flows as needed. The incumbent will provide technical and assistance to imaging and biomedical technology users.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Consistently perform both routine and complex tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of imaging and imaging-related clinical equipment. Examples of devices assigned for maintenance are: Ultrasound, General Radiographic, Radiography & Fluoroscopy (R&F), Computed Radiography (CR), etc.
  • Work with the Division’s Clinical Systems Engineering (CSE) team and Information Technology (IT) to coordinate the security management process, including risk and vulnerability analysis and related documentation associated with interconnected/integrated imaging systems.
  • Interpret test results and make recommendations to solve performance deficiencies.
  • Coordinate the inspection and installation of incoming imaging equipment as required.
  • Perform independently in both routine and complex tasks. Must be able to prioritize work and initiate new work and tasks.
  • Must prioritize work assignments effectively to meet Departmental goals and standards.
  • Provide technical support (phone or on-site) to other engineers as needed.
  • Consistently work with end users to troubleshoot/oversee problem resolution end-to-end, identifying potential root cause, coordinating service/support between Clinical Engineering, IT, Network support, server support, imaging device vendors…
  • Coordinate, monitor, and perform quality reviews of work performed by service contractors and vendors to include maintenance, calibration, installation and verification of service documentation.
  • Serve as a resource to UCSF employees in the proper operation and maintenance of imaging equipment.
  • Assists in writing RFI’s, RFQ’s, and RFP’s.
  • May provides technical training to lower level Imaging Services Engineer.
  • Establishes equipment performance baselines; including the documentation of inspections and evaluations.
  • Assist with and participate in the Division’s technology assessment and technology deployment projects.
  • Conduct evaluations of new equipment, accessories and supplies as required.
  • Work with IT to coordinate security management process including risk and vulnerability analysis and related documentation associated with interconnected/integrated imaging systems
  • When assigned, participate in Device Incident Investigation process and provide follow up to management per Department policy.
  • Investigates safety issues and hazards.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

5-7 Years of current related experience.

Must have experience working on imaging systems of multiple OEMs (any combination of two OEMs – e.g. GE, Siemens, Philips, Toshiba, Hologic, etc.) or experience in multiple modalities withing one OEM.

Must have experience working on Rad/Fluoro modalities

Must have experience working on CT or MR modalities

Strong knowledge of electronics, including solid state technology, linear, analog and digital integrated circuit operation. Stays current on regulations, advances, and trends in the field of clinical imaging and makes proposals to management for complex solutions.

Strong knowledge of imaging safety and performance based on national codes, manufacturing practices and institutional requirements.

Broader knowledge of laws and regulation pertaining to imaging equipment and radiation safety and protection practices.

Strong understanding of EDI concepts including structure of HL-7 standard and how information flows from one system/ application to another using HL-7 format.

Strong understanding of server operations, network operations, security, Wi-Fi networking and cabling.

Detail oriented, with proven ability to effectively manage time, manage tasks and projects, organize competing priorities, and effectively address complex, urgent issues as they arise.

Strong interpersonal and communications skills, with the ability to convey complex information and to effectively train, support, and work productively with end users at all professional and technical levels throughout the organization.

Strong problem-resolution skills, with the ability to work collaboratively to quickly identify complex problems, and develop, test, and implement appropriate solutions in a timely manner.

Strong analytical skills, and knowledge in complex system operations, documentation, and reporting, with the ability to assess system inadequacies, develop and run tests, evaluate performance, and implement new systems, releases, and upgrades.

Ability to work with senior staff and managers in across departments, serving as a technical resource and providing advice and counsel on issues of functionality, efficiency, policy, performance, regulations, and industry trends and advances.
